Organic Cotton Activewear: Why We’re Adding It to KEAN

If you’ve found yourself paying a little more attention to what your clothes are made from lately, you’re not alone.
We have too.
At KEAN, we’ve always cared about how activewear looks, feels and performs. But as we’ve grown, we’ve started asking more questions about the fabrics themselves.
What are we wearing against our skin every day? Do we need technical performance fibres for every kind of movement? And where could natural fibres make more sense?
Those questions have helped shape the next chapter of KEAN.
Enter CORE: our new organic cotton activewear collection.
Why organic cotton?
Cotton is naturally soft, breathable and comfortable against the skin, which makes it a fabric we love for everyday wear and lower-intensity movement.
For CORE, we've chosen GOTS-certified organic cotton.
GOTS, or the Global Organic Textile Standard, is a recognised textile processing standard for organic fibres. Certification covers more than simply how the cotton is grown, with environmental and social criteria applying throughout certified stages of the textile supply chain.
For us, it gives greater confidence in the organic cotton we're choosing and where it has come from.
But there was another question we had to answer.
Is organic cotton actually good for activewear?
The answer is: it depends on what you're doing.
If you're heading into a sweaty HIIT session, running, training for HYROX or doing another high-intensity workout, cotton isn't necessarily the fabric we'd choose.
Technical fibres are incredibly good at what they're designed to do. They can offer stretch, durability, shape retention and moisture management when you're asking a lot from your activewear.
But how often are we actually doing that?
Pilates. Walking. Stretching. A slower gym session. Heading for coffee. Working from home. Running errands.
There are plenty of moments when we don't need our clothing to perform like we're halfway through a HYROX.
And that's where we think organic cotton activewear has a really interesting place.
Why isn't CORE 100% organic cotton?
Because it still needs to move.
CORE is made from 92% GOTS-certified organic cotton and 8% spandex.
We could have chased a 100% natural-fibre claim, but that wasn't the goal.
We wanted to create activewear that uses a high proportion of organic cotton while still providing the stretch, recovery and fit you'd expect from clothing designed to move with your body.
The 8% spandex gives CORE the stretch it needs, while allowing organic cotton to make up the vast majority of the fabric.
It's not about chasing perfection.
It's about making more considered choices where they make sense.
Does this mean KEAN is moving away from performance fabrics?
No.
And this is something that's really important to us.
There is a lot of conversation online about what's "good", "bad", "clean", "toxic" or "non-toxic" right now.
We don't want KEAN to contribute to fear around clothing or make you feel like you've been doing something wrong because you own synthetic activewear.
We own it too. We make it.
Instead, we're interested in understanding which fabrics make sense for which moments.
That's why KEAN is evolving into three distinct collections.
EDGE
For higher-intensity movement.
Think HIIT, HYROX, running and sweaty training sessions where performance matters.
Made with OEKO-TEX® certified performance fabric that has been tested for harmful substances.
CORE
For low-to-moderate intensity movement.
Think Pilates, walking, strength sessions, stretching and everyday movement.
Made from 92% GOTS-certified organic cotton and 8% spandex.
RECOVERY
For rest, recovery and everyday comfort.
Think rest days, travel, coffee runs, post-training and slow Sundays.
Made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton.
Different movement. Different fabrics.
We're not interested in telling you that there's one "perfect" fabric everyone should be wearing.
We're much more interested in asking better questions.
What does this garment need to do?
How are we going to wear it?
Do we need a technical performance fabric here, or could a natural fibre do the job beautifully?
That's the direction KEAN is heading.
Performance when you need it. Natural fibres where you don't.
And we're not stopping here.
We're continuing to learn, ask questions and explore different fibres and fabric technologies as KEAN grows.
Because we don't think creating better activewear is about having all the answers.
It's about continuing to look for better ones.
CORE is coming soon.
